IRS Reminds Taxpayers of Oct. 15 Deadline for Filing 2023 Tax Returns; Extended Deadlines for Combat Zones and Disaster Areas

Posted on October 7, 2024

The IRS is reminding taxpayers to file their 2023 federal tax returns by the Oct. 15, 2024 deadline to avoid penalties. Military members and disaster-area residents may have extended filing deadlines. Those in disaster zones, such as parts of Arkansas, Florida, Texas, and others, can file by Nov. 1, 2024, or later, depending on their location. Taxpayers affected by the Israel conflict have until Sept. 30, 2025, to file.

The IRS offers convenient electronic filing options, including IRS Free File for eligible taxpayers, as well as MilTax for military members. Additional online resources, such as IRS Individual Online Accounts and IRS2Go, make it easier to file, track payments, and schedule tax payments electronically. Taxpayers can also access the IRS’s Interactive Tax Assistant tool for help with tax law questions.
